What Type of Website is This That I Want to Build?

I want to build a website that users can come and use information provided (by me), enter a username/password, and save all their information that they can retrieve the next time that they log in.

What type of website is this, and what type of program would I need to use to accomplish this?

The Type of Website is a Membership Website

From what you describe it sounds like you want to build a membership website. The type of website uses a password protected section of the website that members access.

Some website owners charge a monthly or annual fee for memberships while others simply provide access as a benefit for interested site visitors.

I'm not sure about how you would accomplish allowing visitors to save information on the website and come back at a later point in time to retrieve it. I have seen this capability on other sites such as Turbo Tax, and the FASFA site for applying for student financial assistance so I would expect that there is some type of "plug in" technology that you would need to research that would give your website this type of functionality.
